In Ecaterina Vrana’s visual universe, the chicken (puiul) is a small but powerful symbol. It appears obsessively in her works, fused with her figures and woven into the very structure of her imagery. Surrounded by darker motifs linked to loss, memory, and mortality, the chicken functions as a bright counterpoint: a sign of life, continuity, and hope.

Each year, we invite a contemporary artist to reinterpret this symbol and translate its spirit into a new sculptural award, renewing the symbol while honoring its origins. Through these yearly commissions, the award becomes not only a tribute to Vrana’s legacy but also a reflection of the evolving voices within the Romanian art scene.
